Former President Trump on Monday railed against the news media for primarily covering Hurricane Ida as it slammed the Gulf Coast instead of focusing on the situation in Afghanistan amid U.S. withdrawal.

During a telephone interview on conservative radio host Todd Starnes’ show Monday, Trump called out CNN and MSNBC for their coverage.
“If you look last night, all they talked about was the hurricane. You look at CNN and you look at MSDNC [sic], these are horrible. Unfortunately, they’re way down in ratings, but all they want to talk about is the hurricane or anything else they can talk about,” he said.

“Afghanistan is not even something that can even be discussed in a rational way. The level of stupidity — and we had a great agreement,” Trump said, referring to the 2020 deal his administration made with the Taliban to withdraw U.S. troops by May 1. The last plane carrying U.S. forces left Afghanistan Monday.
“But the corrupt media shows the hurricane all night long even when it was no longer a hurricane, it gets to a storm and all they show is that, they don’t show the truth about Afghanistan,” Trump said.
The former president slammed President Biden for his handling of the withdrawal. The Biden administration has spent weeks scrambling to evacuate Americans and Afghans who aided the U.S. military after the Taliban rapidly gained control of the country earlier this month.
On Aug. 26, an ISIS-K suicide bombing killed dozens of people, including 13 U.S. service members at the airport in Kabul.
Ida made landfall Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane near Port Fourchon, La., devastating the region and leaving more than a million Gulf Coast residents without power. At least two deaths in Louisiana have been linked to Ida, according to CNN.
