Grappling with nearly 7,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti has ordered all city residents to wear protective face masks while shopping at the essential businesses that remain open during the citywide lockdown.
The mandate will go into effect starting Friday. For residents entering grocery stores, pharmacies or ride-sharing vehicles, a mask is required for entry.
The order states that businesses can refuse service to L.A. citizens who aren’t donning protective facial gear. Employees will also follow this same mandate.
California has 17,625 positive cases of COVID-19 as of April 6. North of Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area was the first region to issue stay-at-home orders in the U.S. Los Angeles has reportedly surpassed San Francisco in terms of infection and death rates.
The Los Angeles Times reported that California is still behind in administering COVID-19 tests, making it difficult for state officials and health care providers to get an accurate case count.
