According to a report by The New York Times, national supply chain issues have left shops with barely enough cream cheese to last a few days, and the companies that create the base used for the cream cheese, such as Kraft Heinz Philadelphia, are struggling to meet the demand.

“We continue to see elevated and sustained demand across a number of categories where we compete,” a spokesperson for Philadelphia told The New York Times, adding, “As more people continue to eat breakfast at home and use cream cheese as an ingredient in easy desserts, we expect to see this trend continue.”

According to the report, Zabar’s on the Upper West Side only has enough cream cheese to last about 10 more days.

Some online have pointed the finger back at the shops themselves for the amount of cream cheese they put on each bagel.

“Let’s be real: the cream cheese shortage is entirely self-inflicted from NYC bagel shops loading each bagel with a pound of cream cheese,” historian Jake Anbinder tweeted.

In response, The Guardian added to the analysis and suggested if the shortage continues to become dire, bagel connoisseurs should turn to crafting their own cream cheese from scratch.
