A Baltimore man who worked with a gun violence reduction program in the city was shot and killed Wednesday night on E. Monument Street, making him the third member of the organization to be shot and killed over the last year.
DaShawn McGrier, 29, who worked as a violence interrupter for the organization Safe Streets, was working and speaking with three other men when a truck pulled up and began shooting. McGrier and two of the men were killed, while the fourth was hospitalized but is expected to recover.
No arrests have been made at this time.

“We are heartbroken and angered by the news that another one of our own, a member of the Safe Streets family, was tragically taken from us during tonight’s quadruple shooting in East Baltimore,” Shantay Jackson, director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, said in a press release. “We lost a brother, a villager, who was doing his job and nothing more. We must do better.”
Safe Streets aims to “denormalize” gun violence and help individuals in violence-plagued communities with additional resources, such as job aid and financial support. McGrier is the third Safe Streets member to be shot and killed in the last year.
Dante Barksdale, a Safe Streets outreach coordinator, and Kenyell “Benny” Wilson, a Safe Streets violence interrupter, were shot and killed in January and July, respectively.
According to the Baltimore Police Department, Baltimore has seen more than 300 homicides in the city each year for the past five years, with 338 in 2021.
