Elon Musk’s SpaceX has unveiled a more powerful premium tier of its Starlink satellite internet service designed specifically for “high demand” users, and it’s not cheap.
The new high-performance service called “Starlink Premium” boasts a larger high-performance antenna, download speeds between 150 and 500 megabits per second and latency between 20 and 40 milliseconds, according to the company’s website. That’s a significant increase from Starlink’s standard service, which offers speeds between 100 and 200 megabits per second.
SpaceX said the new service is aimed at “small offices, storefronts, and super users across the globe.” The service is also geared to provide service in “rural and remote locations,” as well as in extreme weather conditions.

“Designed specifically for high demand users, Starlink Premium helps ensure bandwidth for critical operations even during times of peak network usage,” the company’s website says.
But the new service comes at five times the price of the standard Starlink service. Premium customers can expect to pay a $500 refundable deposit, $2,500 for a hardware kit that includes a satellite antenna and $500 per month for the service.
Musk confirmed the launch of Starlink Premium via Twitter Wednesday.
SpaceX has put about 1,800 small Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit since 2019 to build an interconnected constellation to provide high-speed internet access to customers with more batches of satellites on the way. The standard Starlink internet service went live in October.
SpaceX has made launching rockets into space a more common occurrence in recent years through the development of its reusable Falcon 9 rockets, which significantly drive down the cost of carrying out missions.
Last year the company conducted a record 31 launches that included sending eight astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station. So far in 2022, SpaceX has already carried out five launches, including two just this week, and is aiming for a record 52 launches by the end of the year.
