The reputation of the United States and President Trump has fallen significantly among many key allies due to the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll.
The survey from the Pew Research Center across 13 nations between June 10 and Aug. 3 found confidence in the U.S. hit historical lows.

In Germany, just 26 percent of those surveyed said they held a favorable view of the U.S., while less than a third of participants in France said they viewed the U.S. positively. The low numbers are similar to the ratings both countries gave the U.S. during the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Across the nations surveyed, a median of only 15 percent agreed that the U.S. has done a good job in its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Most countries said the World Health Organization and the European Union did well in handling the pandemic, and most of those surveyed gave their own nation high marks, with the exception of the U.S. and the U.K. A median of 37 percent said China did a good job handling the outbreak.
When it comes to President Trump, the poll found just a median of 16 percent of respondents said they had confidence in Trump’s handling of world affairs. Just 20 percent or fewer in Canada and Western Europe had confidence in Trump, compared to about 1 in 10 in Belgium, Denmark, Germany and France. About a quarter of people in Japan and Australia said they trusted the president to do the right thing regarding world affairs.
Pew notes that the reputation of the U.S. has trended downward since Trump won the presidency, but the nation’s popularity has experienced a significant drop amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The U.S. continues to lead the world in coronavirus infections and deaths. Nearly 6.6 million cases have been recorded with more than 195,000 deaths.
