But several hours later, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) requested to reverse the decision, effectively undoing Wormuth’s confirmation.

“As in executive session, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate vitiate the previous action on Executive Calendar 135,” Schumer said on the Senate floor

The move prompted confusion as the senator deleted a previous tweet hailing Wormuth’s confirmation. Wormuth had also already acknowledged her confirmation via Twitter, calling it an honor to be confirmed to the Army’s top civilian post.

It’s not exactly clear why the move was reversed Wednesday night, but it appeared to be a procedural hiccup. Schumer has not provided an explanation for the decision.

Wormuth’s nomination was approved by unanimous consent Thursday morning.

“The Senate just confirmed Christine Wormuth to be the first female Secretary of the Army!” Schumer tweeted Thursday

Wormuth previously worked in the Pentagon during the Obama administration and most recently was the director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center at Rand. She also was a member of President Biden’s Pentagon transition team.
