Arrests made by Border Patrol at the U.S.-Mexico border hit a record high during the 2021 fiscal year, according to a new report from The Washington Post.
The Post reports more than 1.7 million people were taken into custody for illegal crossings at the border between October 2020 and September 2021, the highest tally ever recorded, according to unpublished U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

Meanwhile, some 309,000 migrants from Honduras were arrested, along with 279,000 from Guatemala and 96,000 from El Salvador, according to the report.
The Post notes illegal crossings started increasing last year but began to soar shortly after President Biden was sworn into office, with more than 1.3 million of the arrests occurring during his time in office.
The Biden administration has faced backlash over the issue, with Republicans pointing to the president’s reversal of Trump-era immigration policies as the reason for the surge at the border.
A recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found just 35 percent of Americans approved of Biden’s handling of immigration.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection data is expected to be released to the public later this week.
