Anti-Defamation League demands Tucker Carlson be fired over anti-Semitic ‘replacement theory’

Story at a glance

  • Carlson claimed that it fits within the political left’s idea to essentially replace traditional American voters’ views with its own ideology.
  • “I think we’ve really crossed a new threshold when a major news network dismisses this or pretends like it isn’t important,” Greenblatt said.
  • This was the first time the organization has called for Carlson’s termination

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is calling for Fox News to oust one of the network’s most prominent pundits after the primetime host alluded to ideas the ADL deem an “open-ended endorsement of white supremacist ideology.”

During a segment of his eponymous show, Tucker Carlson commented that the current immigration surge could radically shift the U.S. voting dynamic. Carlson claimed that it is the political left’s plan to essentially replace traditional American voters’ views with its own ideology. Democrats, according to Carlson, are working to replace American voters with “more obedient voters from the third world.”

“Now, I know that the left and all the little gatekeepers on Twitter become literally hysterical if you use the term ‘replacement,’ if you suggest that the Democratic Party is trying to replace the current electorate, the voters now casting ballots, with new people, more obedient voters from the third world,” Carlson said. “But they become hysterical because that’s what’s happening actually. Let’s just say it: That’s true.”

Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive and national director of the ADL, believes Carlson went too far with his seemingly anti-Semitic analysis and is calling for FOX News to fire Carlson. Speaking with CNN’s Brian Stelter on Sunday, Greenblatt said that “Tucker has got to go.”

“I think we’ve really crossed a new threshold when a major news network dismisses this or pretends like it isn’t important,” Greenblatt told CNN’s Brian Stelter. “This has deadly significance.”

Greenblatt’s interview with Stelter re-upped the ADL’s call for Fox to fire Carlson. The ADL sent a formal letter Friday to Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott in its initial request. This was the first time the organization has called for Carlson’s termination, according to The Associated Press.

Fox News hasn’t commented on Greenblatt’s call to fire Carlson or the relationship between what Carlson said in his segment and white nationalist views, but previously emphasized to The Hill that this is a “voting rights question.”

Greenblatt defended his position based on his belief that “Carlson has a history of ‘sanitizing stereotypes and poison.’” He added that Carlson’s reach could effectively legitimize the views of White Supremacists to millions of viewers.

“There is a reason why people like Richard Spencer or David Duke praise Tucker Carlson,” Greenblatt said. “Because indeed he’s taken their talking points and literally used his prime-time platform to mainstream them for millions of Americans.”

Carlson seemingly predicted Greenblatt’s reaction later in his segment and sought to cast aside any potential linkage to racist beliefs. Instead, Carlson made his case in purely political terms.

“Everyone wants to make a racial issue out of it. Oh, you know, the white replacement theory? No, no, no,” Carlson said. “I have less political power because they are importing a brand new electorate. Why should I sit back and take that?”
