Story at a glance

  • Girl Scout Cookie season has begun, and there’s a new cookie in the mix: the Lemon-Ups.
  • Each cookie has a positive message of encouragement etched on the top, supporting girls’ endeavours.
  • The Girl Scouts remain the largest girl-run entrepreneurial program in the United States.

It’s that time of year again — when you receive an email from your coworker alerting the office that they brought in Girl Scout cookies for everyone.

While you are speed-walking toward the conference room to beat your coworkers before all of the Thin Mints are gone, be prepared to see a new flavor — with an empowering message — among the classics.

Meet the Lemon-Ups.

The cookies debuting in 2020 are different from the standard Lemonades in a few ways.

First, they are crispy and tart wafer cookies, as opposed to creme-filled.

Second, there is a positive message etched onto each Lemon-Up such as “I am a Leader,” and “I am a Go Getter.”

According to the Girl Scouts’ website, the positive messaging on the Lemon-Ups “emphasizes what the Girl Scout Cookie program is all about,” which is empowering girls to learn the program’s “essential life skills” such as goal setting, decision making, financial management, business ethics, and interpersonal skills.

Nutritionally, the Lemon-Ups contain the standard 140 calories per two-cookies serving, as well as seven grams of sugar. But, notably, the cookie only uses sustainable palm oil as an ingredient to support conservation and environmental protection efforts.

The cookies will be available for six to eight weeks starting this month. You can find out more about ordering some seasonal snacks and receive a happy affirmation with your first box of Lemon-Ups here
