- A woman has been named the highest paid American CEO by AP.
- Lisa Su has helmed Advanced Micro Devices since 2014.
For the first time, a female CEO is atop The Associated Press’s (AP) list of U.S. CEO compensation.
Lisa Su of Advanced Micro Devices reported a 2019 compensation package of approximately $58.5 million after the company’s strong stock performance. Her compensation was $13 million more than the highest-paid male CEO in the survey, David Zaslav of Discovery.
As the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices for five years, Su’s current compensation grew over four times since the prior fiscal year. This includes $53 million in stock awards and about $3 million in stock options. Her base salary was $1 million, along with a performance bonus of $1.2 million.

Since 2014, Su has seen the company’s stock rise from $3 to $55. Advanced Micro Devices was the S&P 500’s top performing stock in both 2018 and 2019.
Overall, the median pay for women on the list was $13.9 million versus $12.3 million for men. This resulted in a year-over-year increase of 2.3 percent for women, whereas men saw a 5.4 percent yearly increase.
Still, however, women are “significantly underrepresented” as CEOs, with only 5 percent leading S&P 500 companies, AP reports.
“Women are making incremental progress achieving leadership positions in the C-suite,” Lorraine Hariton, President & CEO of Catalyst, a nonprofit organization focused on women in the workplace, told reporters. “However, the fact remains that women CEOs still represent a disproportionately small share of corporate leadership, and women of color aren’t represented at all.”

Following Su as top-earning female CEOs were Marillyn Hewson of Lockheed Martin and Mary Barra at General Motors. The two chief executives recorded compensation packages of $24.4 million and $21.3 million, respectively.
AP complies this list with the help of Equilar, a data firm. To calculate total CEO pay, Equilar adds salary, bonuses, stock awards and stock option awards, deferred compensation, and other financial benefits.
