  • Since Floyd’s death, the four arresting officers were terminated as protests have rattled the city.

Just days after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died when a white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for seven minutes, despite Floyd’s pleas for air, an online petition is demanding the termination and arrest of the four arresting officers involved.

Addressed to Mayor Jacob Frey (D) and District Attorney Mike Freeman, the petition’s signatory goal is 1.5 million.

As of 4:40 on Thursday, the petition has been signed by 2,030,800 individuals online.

“George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer,” the petition reads. “Please help us get justice for George and his family!”

Since the video recording of Floyd’s arrest was broadcasted, the case has garnered national and international attention. Protests ensued in Minneapolis and Los Angeles, and the four arresting officers have since been terminated from the Minneapolis police force.

No charges have been filed against any of the officers.

In addition to the Change.org petition, a GoFundMe established to pay for Floyd’s funeral costs has similarly garnered more than $740,000. The page was established by Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, and has drawn more than 32,000 donors.

Earlier, Philonise went on CNN to tearfully address his brother’s death. “People are…tired of seeing black men die, constantly, over and over again,” he said.

When asked about what he would like to see from police, Philonise wants to see justice and equal protection.

“To the police, I want the police to get everything right. Start doing their job the right way because I haven’t been seeing it,” he said. “Black lives matter, too.”
