The Brooklyn Center Police Department had rocks and other objects thrown at it after another Black man in Minnesota was killed by a Hennepin County officer in what some say was unjustified.

Around 2 p.m. Sunday in Brooklyn Center near Minneapolis, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was killed during a traffic stop, allegedly for having an outstanding police warrant.

Wright reentered his car without permission and an officer fired his weapon, killing him instantly, ABC News reported.

According to The Chicago Tribune, a protest formed early Monday morning in Brooklyn Center, a city of about 30,000 people. Some were seen marching the building, but there were demonstrators who stood on top of police cars.

The police did not officially release Wright’s identity, but Gov. Tim Walz’s tweet gave it away as he openly mourns for Wright’s family loss.

“Officers in pursuit and responding medical personal attempted life saving measures, but the person died at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Officer will release the person’s name following a preliminary autopsy and family notification,” Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said.

“Brooklyn Center officers wear body-worn cameras. We believe body-worn cameras and dash cameras were activated during this incident,” Gannon continued.

Wright’s car drove a few blocks and hit another car, and while the other car’s passengers were fine, a female passenger inside Wright’s car sustained injuries.

The unnamed female, who is said to be Wright’s girlfriend, was taken to the North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale just south of the Brooklyn Center.

Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, received a phone call from her son moments before the incident occurred. She stood alongside protesters near the crash, pleading that someone remove her dead son off the road.

The incident sparked outrage amongst those still grieving the loss of George Floyd, a Black man killed during an arrest after allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store in Minneapolis. A police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck for several minutes, despite Floyd’s pleas for air.
