A study first released in 2019 shows that Blackface, the practice of wearing makeup to portray a Black person’s caricature, is seen as normal among about one-third of the country.
The Pew Research Center poll shows that 34 percent of its American respondents accept Blackface, Blavity reported.

Although 53 percent say it is never or rarely acceptable to perform Blackface, the figures show that 32 percent of Democrats believe Blackface is always or sometimes OK.
Sixty-three percent of Republicans are OK with Blackface, compared to 32 percent of Democrats.
White respondents are 39 percent OK with Blackface, and the second largest ethnic group to think Blackface is OK is Latinos, at 26 percent.
Nineteen percent of Black respondents thought Blackface is OK, making them the least tolerant of the historically racist practice.
According to Think Progress, the survey was conducted between Jan. 22 and Feb. 5, 2019 and 5,599 people were randomly sampled, with the group slightly favoring Black and Hispanic respondents.
The poll’s margin of error is 1.7 percentage points.
