As the New York Police Department began yet another raid on LGBTQ+ patrons at the Stonewall Inn in 1969, the story goes that a Black transgender woman threw a brick through the window of the now-historic bar.
Decades later, demonstrators continue to protest for Black trans liberation, meeting at the inn, which has managed to survive the coronavirus pandemic despite economic hardship. This Thursday, as they passed Carbone, a popular Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, police said several people began banging on the glass of the restaurant’s outdoor dining area.

The glass shattered and a shard struck a diner, who suffered a minor laceration and refused medical attention, NYPD told PIX11. No arrests have been made, and the New York Post reported that “the group appeared to be in good spirits, sipping on red wine” as workers quickly replaced the window.

The weekly protests were reignited last summer after George Floyd’s death coincided with several killings of Black transgender Americans, reported Peninsula Press, which credited activists Qween “Andy” Jean and Joel Rivera for the “new beginning.” This year is on track to be the deadliest year in recorded history for transgender Americans, who are increasingly the target of hate crimes, with more than half as many deaths so far this year as in all of 2020.
