- Scientists studied the effects of radiation on mouse sperm.
- The findings bring scientists one step closer to determining if life on Mars is possible.
Life on Mars is possible — or at least, it is now determined that the life of sperm is possible on the Red Planet, according to new findings.
In research released Friday, scientists discovered that sperm can survive on Mars for up to 200 years, leading to the possibility that humans can reproduce on the planet and human life on Mars can exist.

“These discoveries are essential for mankind to progress into the space age,” lead research author Professor Sayaka Wakayama, a scientist at Japan’s University of Yamanashi, told the Daily Mail.
Scientists studied mice sperm and how it might be affected by radiation in space. The sperm samples were freeze-dried and stored on the International Space Station for six years.
It turns out, mouse sperm can survive in space — and scientists now believe the same of human sperm.
“When the time comes to migrate to other planets, we will need to maintain the diversity of genetic resources, not only for humans but also for pets and domestic animals,” said Wakayama of our intergalactic propagation plans.
