Antisemitic graffiti was discovered on barracks at the Auschwitz-Birkenau ll death camp in Poland, the memorial operating the site said in statement Tuesday.
“Such incident – an offense against the Memorial Site – is, above all, an attack on a symbol of one of the greatest tragedies in human history and an extremely painful blow to the memory of all the victims of the German Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau camp,” the memorial said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The graffiti contained statements in both English and German, as well as antisemitic biblical references and Holocaust denial language, according to the memorial. Police are investigating the matter and are analyzing video footage. The graffiti will be removed once fully documented by authorities.

Auschwitz was distinct from other Nazi-operated camps as it contained a “concentration camp and a labor camp as well as large gas chambers and crematoria at Birkenau constructed for the mass murder of European Jews,” according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Historians estimate around 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, including 1 million Jews.
