Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, revealed she was sexually assaulted by a U.S. senator in a forthcoming memoir.
Abedin wrote in “Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds” that she was sexually assaulted after attending a Washington dinner, where Clinton was not in attendance. The Guardian obtained a copy of the book, in which Abedin described walking out of the dinner with a senator who invited her into his office for coffee.
“Then, in an instant, it all changed. He plopped down to my right, put his left arm around my shoulder, and kissed me, pushing his tongue into my mouth, pressing me back on the sofa,” said Abedin.

Abedin wrote that she was “utterly shocked” at the senator’s behavior and that she wished the last 10 seconds of the encounter could be erased.
The unnamed senator apologized to Abedin following the encounter and said he had “misread” her. Abedin continued by writing, “Then I said something only the twentysomething version of me would have come up with- ‘I am sorry’- and walked out, trying to appear as nonchalant as possible.”
Afterwards, Abedin said she did run into the senator while working on Capitol Hill, and the encounter was friendly. She said she “buried the incident” in her mind hoping to forget about it.
However, in 2018 as Christine Blasey Ford accused now Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a party in highschool, Abedin’s own sexual assault memory was triggered, she wrote.
Abedin recently shared excerpts from her upcoming book with Vogue, detailing her marital scandal with Anthony Weiner, who was former congressman and New York mayoral candidate.
“Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds” will be available Nov. 2.
