Kim Kardashian West joined an effort to relocate members of Afghanistan’s women’s youth development soccer team to the U.K.

Kardashian West chartered a plane, which carried more than 30 teenage players and their families to London from Pakistan, in a collaboration with Rabbi Moshe Margaretten and English Premier League club Leeds United, The Associated Press (AP) reported. The group of around 130 will spend 10 days in a coronavirus quarantine.

The team previously made it to Pakistan where they obtained visas before struggling to leave the country.

The Tzedek Association, a nonprofit U.S. group led by Margaretten, who had a previous connection to Kardashian West, asked the former reality star for assistance in chartering a flight.

“Maybe an hour later, after the Zoom call, I got a text message that Kim wants to fund the entire flight,” Margaretten said.

Khalida Popal, former captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s team who led separate evacuation efforts as the Taliban assumed control of the country in August, told the AP she is “so happy and so relieved” they were able to leave safely.

“Many of those families left their houses when the Taliban took over. Their houses were burnt down,” Popal said. “Some of their family members were killed or taken by Taliban. So the danger and the stress was very high, and that’s why it was very important to move fast to get them outside Afghanistan.”
