The State Department’s travel advisory for India cites terrorism and violent crime such as rape.
“Indian authorities report rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India. Violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations,” the advisory reads. “Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and government facilities.”
Rape and violence against women in India has been a hot button issues for years following a number of high-profile cases.
In 2012, India garnered international attention after a 23-year-old student, given the pseudonym Nirbhaya, was raped and murdered on a New Delhi bus by four men.

Instances of sexual assault in the country have also plagued children, including a 9-year-old girl who was gang raped and murdered in Delhi in August 2021 by four men, including a priest.
Authorities in India are currently investigating a 16-year-old homeless girl’s allegations that she was raped by at least 400 people in India’s Maharashtra state after being sex trafficked by three men.
