On Wednesday, the Pentagon announced that it would include a warning about the risks of climate change in military simulations and war games.
This follows a statement released by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III supporting President Biden’s ambitious sustainability plans to halt climate change.
“I fully support the President’s direction today to include climate considerations as an essential element of our national security and to assess the impacts of climate change on our security strategies, operations, and infrastructure,” the statement read.
Austin went on to confirm that the Department of Defense will prioritize climate change in its risk assessments and operations, which will add a climate risk analysis into modeling, simulation, wargaming and the next National Defense Strategy.
The National Defense Strategy acts as a guide for the U.S. government and department of defense for how to navigate the political complexities between the U.S., China and Russia.
Earlier this week, Biden signed a litany of executive orders aimed at targeting the climate crisis, including passing more aggressive conservation measures and suspending oil and gas leasing.
