The lawsuit claims Amans signed a contract in March 2021 agreeing to pay just over $71,000 but was notified by Tesla in April that the cost of the project would increase.

Amans claims in the lawsuit that the price was raised to $146,462.22. He isn’t seeking compensation but is suing to force Tesla to honor the original contract for the agreed-upon price.

Amans said a Tesla representative spoke to him on the phone following the increase and told him the move was a “business decision.” Tesla offered Amans a free Powerwall storage battery if he decided to move forward with the project, “basically, a $5,000 price cut off the $76,000 price hike,” he told Business Insider.

The lawsuit is the second filed against the company over the price increase.

Tesla’s solar roof product replaces the current roof of a home with tiles that act as solar cells and power the home.

In April, Tesla notified customers it would be increasing the price of the solar roof, and CEO Elon Musk said during a first-quarter earnings call that the company had made “significant mistakes” in estimating costs.

“If a roof has a lot of protuberances or if the roof — sort of the core structure of the roof is rotted out or is not strong enough to hold the solar roof, then the cost can double, sometimes three times what our initial quotes were,” he said

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Changing America.
