“Neighborhood solar installations across all housing types will reshape how people live,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in regards to creating a sustainable residential community. “The feedback we get from the solar and battery products used in this community will impact how we develop and launch new products.”
The self-sufficient neighborhood does not require an electric grid and could potentially supply electricity to the general public. It is also a backup energy generator in times of a power outage in the community.
Since February‘s mass power outage incident, both Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and The Electric Reliability Commission of Texas (ERCOT) have pledged to make changes on how it operates to prevent any more outages, such as being more proactive and aggressive in meeting customers’ demands and supplying them, purchasing significantly more reserves, increasing the amount of generation that is running at any given time and releasing reserves to meet customers’ demands quicker, according to Newsweek.
“The City of Austin is excited for the arrival of these affordable options to housing powered by renewable energy,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler told the Independent. “I am excited for the Tesla, Brookfield, and Dacra partnership’s approach to sustainable energy and housing as an example of the out-of-box thinking that continues to make our community a beacon of innovation for the rest of the country and world.”
Texas is also the home of Musk’s Gigafactory 5, where Tesla Cybertrucks and the Tesla Semis are assembled. The company already manufactures its available electric vehicles like the Model 3 and Model Y cars. The company is expanding its global gigafactory outreach to Gruenheide, near Berlin, Germany in 2022.
