American automaker Rivian’s all-electric R1T on Monday was named MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year, the company announced, labeling it “the most remarkable pickup truck” they’ve ever driven.
“Rivian re-examined what a modern pickup could be and the result is the most remarkable truck MotorTrend has ever driven, making it arguably the worthiest recipient of the ‘Golden Calipers’ in recent history,” MotorTrend said in a news release.
The publication rates vehicles in contention for the prestigious honor based on value, advancement in design, safety, engineering excellence, efficiency and performance of intended function.
MotorTrend noted that since the rise of Tesla’s electric vehicles, it was only a matter of time before companies put out a viable all-electric pickup truck — but Rivian “has forced both the industry and the market to reassess expectations.”
The R1T, which starts at around $70,000 and is the first mass-produced electric pickup in the U.S., has payload capacity of 1,764 pounds, with a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds and contains a battery with a range of up to 314 miles. It is the most energy efficient pickup on the market, according to the publication.

“The 2022 Rivian R1T shows the world a new way to build a pickup and new ways to think about truck design, engineering, and use case. And it gives up almost nothing in capability in the process. It shows us pickups can be for people who never wanted one.”
Earlier this year, the publication named the electric vehicle Lucid Air as its Car of the Year.
