A massive winter storm is expected to strike the central Rockies and High Plains this weekend, potentially bringing multiple feet of snow that could halt travel and cause power outages in the regions, according to the National Weather Service.
The major storm system will bring heavy snow to Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as Cheyenne, Wyo., and parts of western Nebraska. Denver could see anywhere from 18 to 24 inches, Boulder 24 to 30 inches and Cheyenne could record up to 30 inches or more.

“The snowfall totals currently forecast are absolutely historic,” the National Weather Service in Cheyenne said Thursday morning.
Millions of people in the area are under winter storm watches that are likely to turn into winter storm or blizzard warnings as the storm advances Friday. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Friday night through Saturday and Sunday before tapering off Sunday night and early Monday.
“Travel across the urban corridor and foothills may become nearly impossible late Saturday and through much of Sunday during the height of this storm” the National Weather Service in Boulder said.
Denver International Airport said it’s expecting flight delays and cancellations due to the storm while motorists planning weekend travel are urged to get where they need to be before the storm hits Friday evening.
The National Weather Service said the snow is likely to be heavy and wet, increasing the risk for scattered power outages and tree damage.
