In San Diego, a viral moment occurred involving “a dolphin stampede.”
The traditional way of describing a very large pod of dolphins is called a superpod. However, this YouTube channel has a new meaning for the aquatic mammals.
On March 19, at Dana Point in Orange County, a group of tourists captured one of the most beautiful displays of nature: hundreds, if not thousands, of dolphins swimming in one direction.

“They are so graceful even in the frenzied behavior and we are so amazed to see them right off our coast,” a source wrote in the description of the Dana Point Whale Watching video.
“This behavior is known as the Dolphin Stampede, we were the first location to coin the phrase,” the description said.
The video has about 25,000 views, and it is receiving a positive reception from viewers, too, with more than 400 likes on YouTube.
Although the Dana Point Whale Watching was quick in coining the term “Dolphin Stampede,” the video does have its critics, calling out the channel’s poor word choice.
One user who goes by the name of Jennifer Rosner stated the following:
“We used to live on the beach and saw this phenomenon in 2013. The dolphins had moved from San Diego up north, the waters were warm and there was a lot of food for them. In the midst of all of it was a blue whale that hung out for a few days. It was spectacular and amazing. I wouldn’t call this a stampede, its [sic] more like a dolphin run.”
Another user who goes by the name edardofas109 defined a stampede and said why a superpod is the better description.
“’Stampede’ is a poor description. It implies that this is a panicked, clumsy mass movement of animals. I have driven in a boat through a super-pod such as this, and these animals are anything but that. They are graceful and controlled. It’s a beautiful thing to see,” the user said.
