Despite Minish’s efforts to hide from the animal in some shrubs, the bear charged him, and Minish fell backward.

Minish told local KTUU he grabbed the bear’s lower jaw in an attempt to prevent the beast from biting him.

“But then he twisted his head so fast, he knocked my hand free,” Minish said.

“And when he did that, he lunged, grabbed my head, took the first bite, relaxed, and took the second bite, that was stronger. And that’s when he cracked all the bones and part of my head,” he added.

The animal eventually let go and walked off, and Minish called 911 as he lost a significant amount of blood.

He was flown to an Anchorage hospital and treated for serious injuries, including lacerations to his head and puncture wounds.

He’s reportedly in good condition and expected to be released from the hospital as early as Thursday afternoon.

Authorities never located the bear.
