A Colorado man was hospitalized after a mother bear attacked him in his garage on Sunday night.

He suffered severe lacerations to his head and legs that required surgery, but he is expected to recover, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Around 11 p.m. on Sunday, the Steamboat Springs resident realized his garage door was open and went to close it. After encountering the mother bear and two cubs inside the garage, he attempted to slowly back out of the garage, but the mother bear attacked him.

The mother was tracked by park rangers and wildlife officials and euthanized, according to officials, who said the remains were sent to a lab for an autopsy. Wildlife officials haven’t located the cubs yet, but hope to trap them so they can be relocated.

“This is an unfortunate reminder that we need to stay vigilant and ‘bear aware’ at all times,” CPW District Wildlife Manager Kyle Bond said. “Easy access to food will always override a bear’s natural fear of people, so we humans have to stay on top of keeping all food sources secure.”
