A well-known, communal peacock in the Azalea Heights neighborhood of California was found shot and killed on June 30 after a Craigslist ad had been taken out looking for a “peacock assassin,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
“It’s really sad because he probably suffered for at least two or three hours before he died, possibly more,” said resident Melissa Glass.
The peacock, known as Mr. P or Azul to the residents, had appeared in the neighborhood years ago and was beloved by the community, who would often take pictures of him and feed him.

On June 13, an ad appeared on Craigslist looking to “get rid of a wild peacock that is disrupting our lives by any means necessary.”
Though peacocks are not protected by California Fish and Game laws, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
“A potential suspect has been identified by deputies and a search warrant was served at a residence on Hewitt Road in relation to the investigation,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said. “No arrests have been made at this time. The crimes currently being investigated are animal cruelty and conspiracy to commit a crime.”
