A Michigan woman has died after being caught in a flash flood at the Grand Canyon, the National Park Service announced.
The NPS has identified the deceased as Rebecca Copeland, 29, of Ann Arbor, Mich.
“On July 14 at approximately 6 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of two individuals missing and multiple parties injured after flash flood activity impacted Tatahatso Camp near River Mile 38 on the Colorado River,” the NPS said in a news release. “Grand Canyon Search and Rescue sent two paramedics to the scene to assess and treat patients.”
One person in critical condition was located around 2:30 a.m. on July 15 and airlifted to the hospital. Four additional people were found injured at a later, unknown time and airlifted, as well.

At 11 a.m., a commercial river trip company notified the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center that it had located the last two missing people near Tatahatso Camp, one who was uninjured and the other deceased.
The NPS reports that flash floods are common in the area.
“This is because the arid, sparsely vegetated environments found in these areas have little capacity to absorb rainfall. The resulting runoff moves rapidly through the narrow canyons and steep terrain found throughout the region,” the NPS said. “In many areas, even small storms can turn normally dry streambeds into raging torrents of water in a matter of minutes.”
