A female chimpanzee that grew up in captivity, isolated from other chimpanzees, has been transferred to a chimpanzee sanctuary to learn how to act like a chimpanzee.
According to a news release, Baran, a 4-year-old chimpanzee, has been transferred to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Kenya after growing up at the Eram Zoo in Iran.
Baran was born prematurely and needed to be cared for by veterinarians initially, but by the time she was reunited with her mother, her mother could no longer bond with Baran and the rest of the chimpanzees rejected her.

By transferring Baran to the sanctuary, the hope is she will be able to socialize and create bonds with other chimpanzees, benefitting her overall mental and physical health.
“We are extremely delighted that the tireless efforts and high-level correspondence has ultimately led to relocation of Baran to a sanctuary where she will entirely live with others of her kind,” said Stephen Ngulu, head of the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Baran was transferred to the sanctuary on July 5 and will remain in quarantine for 90 days as mandated by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
