Story at a glance

  • The Cumbre Vieja volcano began erupting on Sept. 19.
  • Lava from the volcano has torn through nearly 1,500 acres of land and destroyed 1,500 houses and other buildings, according to Reuters.

Recently released video shows a river of red-hot lava flowing out of Spain’s Cumbre Vieja volcano that’s been erupting for almost a month.

The volcano began erupting on the Spanish island of La Palma last month and has since forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes as lava poured into several towns. Lava from the volcano has torn through nearly 1,500 acres of land and destroyed 1,500 houses and other buildings, according to Reuters

More than 6,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes to get out of harm’s way since the initial eruption on Sept. 19.

On Thursday, researchers with the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands, or INVOLCAN, released video of a river of lava flowing down the volcano.

“One of our crews was able to film a real lava ‘tsunami’ today. Impressive speed and overflow of the lava channel,” INVOLCAN said in a tweet accompanying the video.

About 300 more people had to evacuate their homes as molten rock poured from Cumbre Vieja after a 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Spanish island.

Authorities said they expected lava to keep flowing northwest from the volcano, according to Reuters.
