A bicyclist in Alaska is recovering after a bear attacked him on Oct. 19.

The unidentified man was on a morning bicycle ride in Cantwell when he was charged by a 500-lb. brown bear. The man got off of his bike and yelled at the bear, falling to the ground where the bear mauled his leg.

“Just prior to the bear making contact, the victim fell to the ground and onto his back, covered his head and believes he kicked at the bear,” the Alaska Department of Public Safety wrote in a release. “The bear made contact and bit the victims [sic] lower right leg, just below his knee. The bear made one contact and one bite then immediately retreated into the vegetation the same way it approached.”

After the bear fled, the man was able to make his way to a highway and phone a friend to pick him up and transport him to the Healy Medical Clinic. He was treated for “puncture wounds and a laceration.”

Though the victim was carrying a gun at the time, he didn’t discharge his weapon.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers said “no additional response or investigation is required at this time.”
