Seeing a giant phantom jellyfish is a rare sight not many people experience, as the elusive creature can live at depths of 21,900 feet. But thanks to researchers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, the incredible sight is now visible online.
Researchers with the institute were able to capture the giant phantom jellyfish on camera with the help of its remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Doc Ricketts. This specific jellyfish was found at a depth of 3,200 feet in the Monterey Bay in California.
Filmed in November 2021 and uploaded on Nov. 30, 2021, the bell of the jellyfish was 3-feet wide, and the institute reports its arms can grow up to 33-feet long.

“The giant phantom jelly was first collected in 1899,” the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute wrote. “Since then, scientists have only encountered this animal about 100 times.”
