McConnell says every GOP senator will vote against Biden’s infrastructure plan

Story at a glance

  • President Biden proposed a $4.1 trillion infrastructure plan.
  • Senate Republicans made a counteroffer of a $568 billion package that specifically focuses on transportation infrastructure.
  • Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) has sided with Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he doesn’t believe his Republican colleagues will support President Biden’s $4.1 trillion infrastructure plan, which McConnell referred to as a “grab bag.”

“If they can’t get all their ducks in a row, to use reconciliation again they’ll have to have every single Democrat in the Senate, all of them, in line, in lockstep, in order to do that. A number of them are saying they agree with us,” McConnell said, adding, “I think it’s worth talking about, but I don’t think there’ll be any Republican senators, none, zero, for the $4.1 trillion grab bag, which has infrastructure in it, but a whole lot of other stuff.”

Biden’s infrastructure package is split into two plans: the $1.8 trillion American Families Plan and the $2.3 trillion American Jobs Plan.

The American Jobs Plan would invest in transportation infrastructure, electricity and water systems, as well as the building and preservation of homes that are more energy efficient.

Republicans made a counteroffer of a $568 billion package that specifically focuses on transportation infrastructure, and at least one Democrat has voiced he is also not on board with Biden’s plan.

“I don’t think that we should have a $2.3 trillion bill with all different subject matters in it,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D, W.Va.) said.

If Manchin sides with Senate Republicans, passing the legislation will be an issue.

“Whether it’s $500 billion or $600 billion … or $1 trillion, we have to pay for it,” Manchin said, “And we have to make sure that we don’t continue to add on to this crippling debt and pass it on to future generations.”
