The Boring Company, a transit company helmed by tech CEO Elon Musk, just submitted a bid to build an underground transit system in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis confirmed the news on Twitter, saying that the tunnel would run from the city’s downtown center to the beach. It would be dubbed “The Las Olas Loop.”
“This represents an innovative and unprecedented approach to addressing traffic congestion and transit needs,” Trantalis wrote.
The Boring Company’s signature Loop infrastructure is an “all-electric, zero-emissions, high-speed underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported to their destination with no immediate stops.”
Key to the design of the Loop is a series of Tesla vehicles that shuttle passengers to and from the stops along the Loop network. Passenger volume varies depending on location, but the newly operable Vegas Loop is targeting 51,000 passengers per hour between three stops in the city.
While the Loop tunnels are said to be resilient to earthquakes, there is no word on how the company will design the tunnels for Florida, which sees hurricanes and flooding due to geographically sitting at lower sea levels.
Trantalis added that other firms have 45 days to submit their own proposals.
