“Electric vehicles are now mainstream, and we’ve only just begun to see rising global demand and interest,” Hertz interim CEO Mark Fields said in a release

“The new Hertz is going to lead the way as a mobility company, starting with the largest EV rental fleet in North America and a commitment to grow our EV fleet and provide the best rental and recharging experience for leisure and business customers around the world,” Fields added.

Customers who rent a Tesla Model 3 will have access to the EV company’s 3,000 supercharging stations throughout the U.S. and Europe, and Hertz says it’s moving forward with installing thousands of chargers throughout its location network.

Electric vehicles will now make up more than 20 percent of the company’s fleet across the globe with the current Tesla order. Hertz began adding EVs to its rental fleet in 2011.

Tesla stock soared as high as 7 percent following the news.
