Coronavirus cases pass 5 million globally

The number of coronavirus cases globally passed 5 million on Thursday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

South America has overtaken the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new cases globally each day, according to Reuters.

South America reportedly accounted for about a third of all 91,000 new cases earlier this week, whereas Europe and the U.S. each represented about 20 percent of new cases.

Brazil leads South America based on the number of reported cases at 291,579. The country has the third most infections of any nation in the world, behind the U.S. and Russia.
