After months of flouting guidelines put in place by his own public health advisers as the coronavirus pandemic worsened in the U.S., both Trump and then-first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19 in October.

Hours after announcing he tested positive for COVID-19 via Twitter, the president’s fever spiked and his blood oxygen level fell below 94 percent, even dipping into the 80s, according to the book.

The book includes details of how aides scrambled to secure experimental treatments for the former president as his condition grew more dire leading up to his three-day stay at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Two advisers close to Trump who were briefed on his condition told the book’s authors that the former president was “gravely ill” and they feared that he “wouldn’t make it out of Walter Reed.”

Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows was also reportedly seriously concerned about the then-president’s condition. The book, citing two people close to Meadows, claims Meadows was “consumed with fear that Trump might die.”

Despite internal concerns, Trump took efforts publicly to downplay the severity of his bout with the disease, briefly leaving the hospital to drive by and wave to crowds of his supporters and eventually staging a helicopter flight on Marine One to the White House where he dramatically removed a mask.

The book is set to be released Tuesday.
