China is carrying out mass coronavirus testing in the city of Wuhan where the first cases of COVID-19 emerged in late 2019, following confirmation of the first localized infections in the city in more than a year, according to The Associated Press (AP).
China is currently experiencing a rapidly spreading outbreak fueled by the highly contagious delta variant. The country has implemented a wave of travel restrictions and quarantine orders not seen since cases exploded out of Wuhan early last year.
Domestic flights have been canceled by the cities of Nanjing and Yangzhou, and Beijing has stopped trains from 23 stations.

China had largely been able to keep infections at bay over the course of the pandemic with lockdowns and testing.
Wuhan has about 11 million residents and is the latest city to undergo mass testing after three cases were confirmed Monday. The infections were the first nonimported cases in over a year.
The outbreak has been traced back to a cluster in Nanjing where a group of cleaners at an international airport tested positive last month.
The AP reports 90 new cases were confirmed nationwide Monday, with 61 spread locally and 29 from people who recently traveled abroad.
