38 percent of people are concerned about contracting COVID-19 over the holidays: poll

As the holiday season approaches and Americans are anxious to return to larger family gatherings this year following the worst of the pandemic, a new poll shows a significant number of people are worried about becoming infected with the coronavirus during the festivities. 

A recent survey conducted by Coupon Follow found that 38 percent of respondents said they were concerned about contracting COVID-19 over the holidays as more Americans begin traveling and congregate indoors, despite the availability of vaccines. 

More than 68 percent of the U.S. population has received at least one dose of vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More recently, vaccine eligibility opened up to children ages 5 to 11.

The poll also found 40 percent of people said they felt comfortable attending events with unmasked attendees, while 36 percent said they were OK gathering with people who are unvaccinated. The poll surveyed 1,106 respondents. 

The research comes as the coronavirus pandemic continues into a second holiday season. Nationally, the seven-day average for new cases is 70,431, a less than 2 percent decline from the week prior. Although some parts of the country are seeing rising cases as temperatures are dropping. New cases appear to be on the rise in at least 29 states.

But health experts stress Americans shouldn’t hesitate to gather together in the coming months with relatives if everyone is fully vaccinated.
