Tens of thousands of students enrolled in the Los Angeles Unified School District have failed to comply with a COVID-19 vaccine mandate that requires them to be fully vaccinated by Jan. 10, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The news outlet reports some 34,000 students 12 and older in the district, which is the second-largest in the nation, have not been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus as required by the district or reported their status to the district, and there’s no longer enough time for eligible students who have not gotten their first jab to be considered fully inoculated by the deadline. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose.
The Los Angeles Unified School Board passed the mandate in September 2021 requiring all students ages 12 and older be fully vaccinated when the spring semester begins. The district is one of the few in the country that requires students to be fully vaccinated.

The Los Angeles Times reports the student compliance rate is nearly 85 percent including those who have received at least one shot. The news outlet notes students who appear to be out of compliance with the mandate may have simply not yet uploaded the proper documentation.
Meanwhile, the district on Tuesday unanimously voted to terminate the contracts of 496 employees who have refused to get the vaccine.
Of the nearly 500 former employees, 418 were classified as non-credentialed but critical staff employees, such as instructional aides, custodians and cafeteria workers.
