A Reuters tally indicates that coronavirus cases in the U.S. have topped the 1 million mark on Tuesday, having reportedly doubled in 18 days.

The U.S. continues to lead the world in confirmed cases of COVID-19, with the Johns Hopkins CSSE map specifically recording 1,003,328 cases. More than 57,000 Americans have died due to the virus, although a lack of testing, as well as asymptomatic spread, leads experts to think the actual numbers are higher.

Reuters reports that the death toll averages to approximately 2,000 lives lost daily this month, per the news organization’s data.

Roughly 30 percent of the cases have occurred in New York State, with New York City alone accounting for 17,682 cases.

This staggering figure comes as multiple states begin to loosen stay-at-home restrictions and reopen nonessential businesses to the public.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) public health guidelines including washing hands, wearing a face mask and social distancing remain largely in effect.
