Google said it receives about 10 billion searches related to hair, nail and skin issues every year and created this app as a tool to aid these inquiries.

The tool has the user take three photos of the affected skin from different angles, then prompts them with questions about their skin type, the issue and when it appeared. The app then uses AI to compare the information to that of 288 conditions, giving the user a list of possible conditions with basic information and photos.

“In a matter of seconds, you will have a list of possible matching dermatological conditions,” Karen DeSalvo, Google’s chief health officer and former assistant secretary of health in the Obama administration, told the New York Post.

While accessible in Europe, the app is not currently available in the United States.

While a helpful tool, the results given are not a diagnosis and should not replace seeing a medical professional such as a dermatologist.

“The tool is not intended to provide a diagnosis nor be a substitute for medical advice as many conditions require clinician review, in-person examination, or additional testing like a biopsy,” Google said in a blog post. “Rather we hope it gives you access to authoritative information so you can make a more informed decision about your next step.”
