Beyoncé donates $6 million to mental health relief amid coronavirus pandemic

Beyoncé pledged $6 million to mental health charities and other initiatives for continued outreach efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a press release, Beyoncé highlighted the struggle of “epic proportions” communities of color face during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the lack of funding.

“Many families live in underserved areas in homes that make it harder to practice social distancing,” she explains. “Communities that were already lacking funds for education, health and housing are now faced with alarming infection and fatalities.”

Multiple states have released data showing black Americans are disproportionately affected by the coronavirus, mainly due to a lack of access to quality health care and higher rates of preexisting conditions.

Beyoncé touched on this issue during last week’s Global Citizen Together At Home concert.

Elle writes that Beyoncé addressed the “alarmingly high rate” at which black people are succumbing to the coronavirus.

“We are one family and we need you; we need your voices, your abilities, and your strength all over this world,” Beyoncé said as she encouraged minorities to protect themselves. “I know it’s very hard but please be patient and stay encouraged, keep the faith, stay positive and continue to pray for our heroes.”

The funding will go toward the United Memorial Center, Bread of Life, Matthew 25, along with other organizations. The funds will be distributed through Beyoncé’s charitable foundation, BeyGOOD.

It aims at providing food, water and hygienic products to other organizations.

The star also partnered with Twottsd CEO and founder Jack Dorsey’s #startsmall campaign, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to distribute the $6 million among local communities, as well as the National Alliance in Mental Illness (NAMI) to help provide mental health services in Houston, New Orleans, New York and Detroit.
