The Federal Emergency Relief Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized a grant to cover the mental health services for Tennesseans affected by the tornados that devastated Nashville’s Donelson and Hermitage neighborhoods in March.

The Tennessean reported Monday that a local Nashville behavioral healthcare clinic, Centerstone, will partner with the state’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to help form the Tennessee Recovery Project, funded by FEMA.

Tennessee’s capital city, along with the surrounding Putnam, Wilson and Davidson counties, endured several severe tornadoes in March that claimed 26 lives and $1.1 billion in personal and property damage.

Lacy Monday, the director of Centerstone’s Crisis Care Services, told the Tennessean that natural disasters often take a severe emotional toll on survivors.

“Centerstone has been tasked with building a team of crisis counselors to help Donelson and Hermitage with providing resource connections, short-term counseling, long-term counseling referrals and coping advice,” Monday said.

With a record high number of severe storms already recorded, 2020 is anticipated to be the deadliest year for tornadoes in the U.S. in eight years, according to data compiled by Weather.com.

Similarly, Michigan was granted federal funding for mental health aid to support individuals during the coronavirus pandemic. The state is set to receive $2 million from both FEMA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for increased mental health services.
