Prince Harry opened up Thursday about what it’s like dealing with a family member or loved one who experiences serious depression or suicidal thoughts.

The 36-year-old Duke of Sussex, who previously revealed his own mental health struggles, discussed on a bonus episode of his Apple TV+ series with Oprah the fear of not knowing what to say to a person who’s hurting.

“So many people are afraid of being on the receiving end of that conversation because they don’t feel like they have the right tools to give the right advice,” Harry said on the episode that aired Thursday night, according to The Daily Mail.

“But what you want to say is ‘you’re there,’” Harry added, “Listen, because listening and being part of that conversation is without doubt the best first step that you can take.”

Harry told actor Glenn Close in the latest episode that “there’s an element of shame” and inadequacy a person might feel when someone close to them shares their own mental health challenges.

“How did we not know? How did you not feel comfortable enough to come to me and share that with me,” Harry asked, according to The Mail. “But we all know when people are suffering and people are struggling, that we’re all incredibly good at covering it up for those that know that we’re covering it up.’”

Harry previously spoke with Oprah in the series about his wife, 39-year-old actor and Duchess of Sussex Meghan, who dealt with suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy. He admitted that he felt somewhat ashamed with how he handled the situation.

“The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in a position of losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her, our baby,” he said.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255 for free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
