Story at a glance

  • Public health officials have been warning of a second wave of coronavirus infections.
  • After parts of Asia saw declines in new cases, cities began lifting their lockdowns.
  • New outbreaks, however, speak to the risk of relaxing preventative measures too early.

As the novel coronavirus outbreak spread across the globe, residents of Wuhan, China, thought the worst had passed. The city where COVID-19 first emerged started to reopen in early April after months under lockdown. There hadn’t been any new confirmed symptomatic cases since April 3.

But then on May 10, a previously asymptomatic patient developed symptoms, becoming the city’s first symptomatic COVID-19 case in more than a month. His wife and 18 other people in their residential compound tested positive for COVID-19 as well, although only five patients in total showed symptoms.

Now, some are concerned about a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak starting in Asia. The Chinese government has ordered a new round of coronavirus testing in the area, according to the Wall Street Journal, and local officials are working to address the latest outbreak.

Meanwhile, South Korea is testing and tracing thousands of people after an outbreak of new coronavirus cases in Seoul. The country had previously been lauded for its response to the pandemic and is now in the process of rolling back social distancing measures and restrictions.

Public health officials have been predicting a second wave of coronavirus cases and deaths, especially if people ease off preventative measures before a vaccine is widely available. In the United States, some states that have lifted their lockdowns and begun reopening have seen spikes in new cases
