New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) said Thursday that the city plans to fully reopen July 1.

The Democratic mayor told MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the city is “ready for stores to open for businesses to open offices, theaters — full strength.”

De Blasio praised the city’s vaccination effort and added that hospitalizations in one of the nation’s former COVID-19 hotspots continue to drop. The daily average of hospitalizations in the city sits at 96 over a seven day period.

“What we’re seeing is people have gotten vaccinated, an extraordinary number, 6.3 million vaccinations in New York City to date,” de Blasio said.

“We got to keep working hard at that, but what’s amazing is every single day we’re beating back COVID more and more, hospitalizations down,” de Blasio added. “You know, we’re just seeing a better situation every day. We’re ready to take that pathway to a full reopening.”

New York City has reported a seven-day average of 1,556 new COVID-19 cases and 25 confirmed deaths.

The mayor further emphasized the role vaccinations will play in any effort to fully reopen, reiterating that shots are free “all over the city” and walk-up sites are now available. New York City opened up appointment free vaccinations to all eligible adults last week.

“This is going to be the summer of New York City. You’re going to see amazing activities, cultural activities coming back,” de Blasio said. “I think people are going to flock to New York City because they want to live again.”

There have been 32,461 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in New York City, according to New York Times COVID-19 data.
