After less than 200 cases were reported in February, 2,271 new confirmed cases were reported on Wednesday alone and are sparking discussions.
The United Conservative Party leader John Kenney, a Canadian politician who served as the first minister of Alberta, has added new measures in response to the surge of cases.
“We must act to bend the curve down one last time,” Kenney told reporters during a news conference.
Under the new COVID-19 restrictions, schools in the city will operate exclusively online for two weeks and outdoor dining at restaurants is suspended for up to three weeks.
In a city where 75 percent thinks the COVID-19 pandemic was handled poorly, nearly half of Alberta (45 percent) believe the prior restrictions were going too far.
“The reason we are at this critical stage of the pandemic in Alberta, with record high daily case counts and intensive care numbers, is precisely because, for whatever reason, too many Albertans are ignoring the rules we have in place,” Kenney, The Guardian reported.
Alberta has a population of about 4.4 million people, with 81 percent of Alberta’s population living in urban areas and 19 percent in the rural areas, according to. In terms of its economical and cultural similarities, Alberta is like a snow-filled Texas, the Huffington Post reported, and seems to be experiencing a similar surge in COVID-19 cases.
